This isn’t a CV, and doesn’t aim to cover the same ground. Instead, it’s about some of my work preferences and the reasons for them. It covers some of the areas that might come up in a typical “fit” interview. My goal is for this page to be a stake in the ground as to what I most want to work on.
Industry
I broke this down into three categories. I’m not ranking them more finely than that, there’s too much variance from one company or role to another.
Favourites
- Space (including Earth Observation and sectors downstream of that): a lot of my blog entries are about space, and I’d love to get involved in the New Space revolution.
- Education or Health: I cautiously agree with the idea that Baumol’s cost disease is driving up the cost of these compared to everything else. They’re critical to social and personal wealth and wellbeing, so anything that can lower costs or improve output in these areas would be very interesting.
- Climate tech: anything at all that improves our ability to prevent, or mitigate, emissions or higher temperatures. It needs to be done, and it would be great to be part of that.
- Deep tech: I’m not an skilled scientist or engineer myself, but I think making new things possible is very cool, and if someone doing that needs some software written,
Middling
Everything else, including FMCG and retail, banking, most fintech, and marketing tech. They’re honest work.
No Thanks
- Tobacco: just no.
Company Type
I’ve a strong preference for growth-oriented companies vs large corporates. Smaller companies often have a greater connection to a shared goal, whereas large corporates often have more alienation and political dysfunction. Easy choice between the two!
I have a slight bias against consultancy work. They can be great for learning quickly, but they also suffer, excuse the pun, from agency problems.
